The Basics - Critical Path Analysis (CPA)
Critical Path Analysis (CPA)
The method of demonstrating a scheme/project using a network and exploiting it to recognise the most effective means of accomplishing it is called critical path analysis.
Aims:
An activity is a job or process that forms part of an overall project. An activity that begins at event i and finishes at event j is referred to as activity (i, j). They are represented by arcs on a precedence network. The nodes represent events, i.e. the beginning/end of activities.
Activities may not have identical start and end nodes:
The method of demonstrating a scheme/project using a network and exploiting it to recognise the most effective means of accomplishing it is called critical path analysis.
Aims:
- To be able to form an activity network from a precedence table (including the use of dummy activities, dummies, if necessary).
- To use a forward and backward pass to find the earliest and latest times of an event.
- To be able to find the critical path in an activity network.
- To calculate the total float of an activity.
- To construct charts to allow us to schedule activities.

You have unique start and finish nodes.
